Vibratory Finishing of Copper and Aluminum Components

At Electris, we understand the importance of precision and quality in copper and aluminum components for our customers.

As part of our finishing processes, we offer vibratory finishing, which ensures the perfect smoothing and preparation of elements for further production stages.

Vibratory finishing (also known as tumble finishing) is a fully automated and precise surface finishing technology.

Its main purpose is to remove burrs, sharp edges, and unevenness resulting from machining processes such as cutting, milling, drilling, or turning.  This process is ideal for deburring copper and aluminum components, especially those with complex shapes and small sizes.

What does vibratory finishing involve?

This surface finishing technology involves the free movement of workpieces placed in a drum, in a specially selected mixture.  The key elements of the process are:

  • abrasive media: ceramic or plastic, which mechanically interact with the surface of the processed parts,
  • and process fluids: specialized chemical solutions that support the grinding process, clean and protect the processed elements.

The tumble finishing bowl and all its contents are then subjected to vibrations.  The vibratory action causes the media to rub against the processed elements, which gives the desired result.  Proper selection of process parameters is crucial to achieve the desired final effect.  Factors such as the type of abrasive material, amplitude and frequency of vibrations, as well as appropriate process fluids, can be adjusted to achieve a specific surface finish.  Depending on the application, it can be a dry or wet process.

What are the advantages of using vibratory machining for copper and aluminum parts?

Vibratory finishing enables:

  • removal of burrs and sharp edges,
  • rounding of edges,
  • surface smoothing,
  • surface polishing.

It is also an important stage in production, aimed at improving the safety, functionality, and aesthetics of products.  A smooth, uniform surface is essential in many industrial applications.

What elements can be vibratory finished?
A wide range of copper and aluminum elements can be deburred through vibratory finishing, especially those that have undergone machining processes such as cutting, milling, drilling, or stamping.  Elements such as:

  • small profiles and sections,
  • small-sized copper or aluminium bus bars,
  • bent elements,
  • elements of welded and bolted structures,
  • copper or aluminum connectors,
  • pins, sleeves, and clamps.

What are the advantages of deburring through the vibratory finishing process?

  • Significant improvement in surface quality: sharp edges and unevenness are eliminated, which improves the technical and aesthetic parameters of the components.
  • Ideal preparation for further processing: a smooth surface is an excellent substrate for electroplating, painting, and other finishing processes.
  • Effective removal of impurities: vibratory finishing effectively removes any impurities that may negatively affect the material properties.
  • Increased durability: elimination of surface defects extends the life of components.
  • Aesthetic appearance: smooth, uniform surfaces enhance the visual appeal of your products.
  • Versatility of applications: deburring allows us to process elements of various shapes and sizes, handling both small and large production series.

In what industries is vibratory finishing used?

Vibratory finishing is widely used in various industries, including:

  • energy,
  • electronics,
  • railway,
  • data centers,
  • automotive,
  • aviation,
  • and many others
